Mom knows me well. She probably guessed I did not have something to blog about for today, so she got something from T&T Bakery for me. She also likes to try their new varieties of breads and buns, so we lucked out today when they made three new types, one of which she brought home. They can get quite creative sometimes, and rarely do they turn out to be bad combinations. Some are better than others, of course, but usually, they are all quite decent. Once in a while, you might stumble across a new favourite, although I still like many of the traditional, dependable types.
This new 桂圆养生紫米方包 (Longan Purple Glutinous Rice Bread) is basically what it says. The longan and purple glutinous rice are mixed together into a sort of red bean paste type filling and rolled into the bread then baked. There could have been more rice and longans, though. The filling was not very ‘filling, leaving a lot of the bread still empty. The dough was lovely, though – soft, moist, sticky, and chewy with a slight sweetness to it. The bottom, top, and sides were kind of dry, and I did not like the pastry web-like strips on top of the bread. The texture on the inside was great, however. My only real complaint is I would have liked more of the rice and longan, but this bread is kind of addicting, getting better and tastier with each bite, drawing you in and tempting you to finish the whole thing in one sitting. For me, it is just another of those slightly creative buns that do not turn out as great as expected but is definitely not bad. For under $3, it is a very decent loaf. So there, my breakfast problem for tomorrow has been solved!
