Despite the long wait of over half an hour, we decided to eat dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. I just needed my fill of tender, succulent shrimp. Our server, Roxie, was extremely friendly and helpful, offering suggestions of the menu and even playing trivia with us halfway through, though they were quite busy. I just love the casual, themed ambiance of the restaurant; everything was just really fun.
As suggested, we got the Shrimper’s Net Catch. The 2/3 pound of beer steamed shrimp came in a cute little metal bucket and was dumped onto the fake newspaper lining the plate. The shrimp were slit near the top and quite tender and succulent, though they did not taste exactly like steamed shrimp. They were heavily coated in the spicy and flavourful Secret Recipe Cajun Spice sauce, which went nicely with a touch of lemon juice. I appreciated having just shrimp, simple yet delicious.
The Shrimp Chimichurri Skewers came with two huge skewers of a total of six jumbo shrimp and grilled red bell peppers, onions zucchini, and yellow squash. It was served over jasmine rice with extra chimichurri sauce of herbs, black pepper, and crushed red chilies under a layer of olive oil on the side. I found the extra sauce to be quite oily but the spices were flavourful. These shrimp were the most tender and succulent out of the whole meal, wonderfully plump and juicy. The zucchini and peppers were refreshing, while the onions and summer squash were slightly on the raw side and thus not as appetizing. I found the oil to be a little too much for the vegetables, but the shrimp and jasmine rice went well with the spices.
The Accidental Fish & Shrimp had a lovely lemon butter sauce coating the fish, shrimp, and jasmine rice, making the rice especially flavourful and good since it was served on the dry side. The green onions on top added a nice zing but the roma tomatoes were on the bland side. I could not taste the tangy goodness of a good tomato. The broiled mahi mahi fillets were slightly dry and did not soak up the flavours as nicely. The grilled shrimp were not very big and were also slightly overdone. The sauce did save the day with its refreshing richness.
I found Bubba Gump to be slightly overpriced but it is in Times Square after all. We got the booth by the end corner so it was quiet, spacious, and very relaxing. The atmosphere was great so definitely no complaints there. It is definitely a must-try and great if you are just craving endless shrimp options!
