Friday was also National Cream-filled Doughnut Day, so naturally, I had to go to Dunkin’ Donuts to get the Boston Kreme Donut. This is the doughnut I always depend on, and one that I use to judge the quality of doughnut shops. This one was made quite well, for a fast food chain at least. The chocolate icing on top had a very thin, slightly crispy top with the rest kind of melting in your mouth. The dough was very soft and moist, freshly fried. The filling was generous and very creamy. It was not overly sweet and had a good amount of custard in it rather than just greasy cream. It was dense and smooth in texture, going very well with the extremely soft doughnut dough.
I also asked for an Apple Orchard Munchkin, one of their new seasonal items, but since they only sold munchkins in counts of five, the guy gave me one for free. I did not like it, though. The munchkin was quite dry. The apple flavour was barely there in the cake dough; it was so faint that if I did not know it was apple, I would not have guessed. The cinnamon sugar and other ingredients on the outside were also not very strong and quite bland. I think the dryness contributed to the faint taste, but this was certainly a huge disappointment. Perhaps the larger version of the doughnut would be better.
