Raspberry French Macaron
~

ImageSweet and tangy, this Raspberry French Macaron had great flavour, tasting like fresh raspberries rather than being heavy on the artificial tastes. However, the shells were not exactly delicate. They had kind of sunk in a little and become a little hard.

Chocolate Times Two – Starbucks

チョコレートマカロン (Chocolate Macaron)
マシュマロ&チョコレートクッキー (Marshmallow & Chocolate Cookie)
~

ImageAs I walked around in Harajuku, I went in to Starbucks with some friends. The チョコレートマカロン (Chocolate Macaron) had decent flavour was a little hard and stale. It was not a big problem but it was not the most delicate macaron I have had. However, I still admire Starbucks for carrying these little French treats that are now so popular all over the world!Image

Finally, I managed to find マシュマロ&チョコレートクッキー (Marshmallow & Chocolate Cookie) at this particular Starbucks that I had not seen elsewhere. The cookie was a little too crunchy and not gooey enough for me but the cocoa flavour was nice and strong without being outright sweet. I wished the marshmallow flavour were more distinct though.

Tokyo Delights – Starbucks

March 4, 2013
Starbucks, Minato, Tokyo, Japan

さくらシフォンケーキ (SAKURA Chiffon Cake)
ザッハトルテ (Sachertorte)
さくらシフォンケーキ (SAKURA Chiffon Cake)
キャラメル&ウォールナッツパウンド フード (Caramel & Walnuts Pound)
さくらマカロン (Sakura Macaron)
フィローネ 春野菜&ミートローフ (Filone Spring Vegetables & Meatloaf)
ハニー&カスタードドーナツ (Honey & Custard Doughnut)
マンゴー パッション ティー フラペチーノ (Mango Passion Tea Frappuccino Blended Juice Drink)
~

ImageI had been waiting so long to visit a Japanese Starbucks. They have some different drinks and a completely different food menu from that in the US. I was extremely eager to try out the sweet pastries, savoury snacks, and sandwiches. Unfortunately, they had sold out of the SAKURA lattes and frappuccinos, something I was really looking forwards to. However, there were so many other choices to choose from.Image

Sticking with their spring promotion, Casey and I decided first on a slice of さくらシフォンケーキ (SAKURA Chiffon Cake). It was light and aromatic, with the lovely cherry blossom fragrance. The pink was so lovely to look at. The cake itself was airy, light, and slightly sweet. The cream on top was the same, and the little cherry blossom was also good. It was such a delicate dessert!Image

The ザッハトルテ (Sachertorte) was a slight let down after the pink delight of that first dessert. The chocolate shell was crunchy and the chocolate cake inside dense. The cocoa flavour was very strong and rich, and not overly sweetened. However, the cake was just slightly dry and this was just not particularly special.Image

The キャラメル&ウォールナッツパウンド フード (Caramel & Walnuts Pound) was delicious as well, and perfect for celebrating National Pound Cake Day (despite the fact that I was out of the US!). The caramel flavour was light and the walnuts added a wonderful crunch to the otherwise moist yet dense cake. My favourite part was the caramel frosting on top, which was not as sticky or moist as some frostings, more like a fondant layer. It was sweet and very yummy though.Image

The さくらマカロン (Sakura Macaron) was not to be outdone. Delicate and sweet, it also had a distinct cherry blossom fragrance that was just so light. The cream inside was a little denser and sweeter, contrasting the cookies nicely.Image

The フィローネ 春野菜&ミートローフ (Filone Spring Vegetables & Meatloaf) was incredible. The baguette was a little tough, the way I like it. I loved the asparagus, peppers, and other vegetables with the gravy and melted cheese. The meatloaf was thin but provided a richness to the sandwich. The flavour was clearly an Asian take on a western food, something I am familiar with and like very much.Image

The ハニー&カスタードドーナツ (Honey & Custard Doughnut) was not outstanding but still good. The honey made it sweet and the custard inside was dense, egg-y, and quite sweet as well. The doughnut dough was actually made from wheat or grain flour, not just white flour, giving it a fuller taste.Image

To drink, I got the マンゴー パッション ティー フラペチーノ (Mango Passion Tea Frappuccino Blended Juice Drink). It was not very sweet at all, with the aroma of the mango and the passion fruit juice that was slightly bitter and very tangy. It was incredibly refreshing and a better alternative for just cold juice.Image

My first visit at a Japanese Starbucks was just fantastic. The food and drinks were wonderful, not to mention the great service. Despite taking some time to communicate to the baristas what I wanted, they were very patient and helpful. They also had very interesting liquid sugar for people getting regular coffee. Everything was just splendid!

Coconut Cream French Macaron
~

ImageYet another macaron, this time the Coconut Cream French Macaron. I was not a big fan of this flavour. One of the shells was slightly browned on the flat side. The coconut cream was quite rich and tasted strongly of coconut. However, that is not one of my favourite flavours to begin with.

Going Nuts for Green – Sugar Philly

Pistachio French Macaron
~

ImageIt’s National Pistachio Day! These little green nuts have always been perplexing for me since I was a little girl. Hidden inside their shell and super hard to crack open sometimes, it’s nice to find a crunchy, slightly sweet, and nutty gem. They are my favorite plain nuts to snack on.

To celebrate, Sugar Philly offered their Pistachio French Macaron. The green was pale and not too artificial. It actually imitated the nut itself. The shell was a little hard and not as delicate but the inside was still moist and slightly chewy. The pistachio filling was sweet, nutty, and absolutely delicious. It had a slightly rough texture to reflect the nuts. I absolutely adored this little green bite of joy.

Tropics and Italy – Sugar Philly

Pineapple Coconut French Macaron
Italian Chocolate Chip French Macaron
~

Sugar Philly churned out two new flavours. First was the Pineapple Coconut French Macaron. I loved the pineapple flavour in this, from all the bits inside the filling. The coconut flavour was there and made it even more tropical but took away from the refreshing aspect of the pineapples.Image

The Italian Chocolate Chip French Macaron was not my favourite. It was not very sweet and I could not find too many chocolate chips. I wished there were a bit more crunch and a more defined chocolate flavour.

Crunchy Through and Through – Sugar Philly

Pomegranate French Macaron
Creme Fraiche Cheesecake
~

ImageSugar Philly’s new flavour from last year that I had yet to try was the Pomegranate French Macaron. The delicate treat was delicious, and not just the creamy filling inside but also the juicy crunch of the pomegranate seeds!Image

The Creme Fraiche Cheesecake was also scrumptious. The cheesecake was more like the Asian kind, light, airy, and not incredibly cheesy. The middle was more of a cake and the bottom had a very crumbly and crunchy crust. It was a sweet crust and the texture from the crust and the shredded apple was a nice contrast.

Pecan Cinnamon French Macaron
~

Cinnamon is so strong sometimes, but it was lovely on the Pecan Cinnamon French Macaron. Although I could not taste the pecan distinctly except for a little of the nutty aroma in the filling, the cinnamon was quite overwhelming. Thankfully, I love cinnamon and so this macaron was great for me. The delicate shell matched the sweet filling perfectly. Nutty and spicy, what’s not to love?

Caramel Apple French Macaron
~

I was in a huge rush but somehow, even after forgetting my wallet the first time, still managed to sneak in a bite of the new Caramel Apple French Macaron from Sugar Philly. The coming Sunday is National Caramel Apple Day, so I guess I am just celebrating it two days in advance. The shell was delicate and sweet but slightly hollowed-out, collapsing in on itself just a bit. The filling was thick and gooey caramel and a spiced apple puree filling. The two together was autumn heaven. I loved the sticky and very sweet caramel and the tart apple flavor just popped in my mouth. This little red treat was just divine.

Pumpkin Pie French Macaron
~

Sugar Philly’s Pumpkin Pie French Macaron was not only a perfect treat for the fall, but also one of their best flavors ever in my opinion. Unlike many macarons, this one was not focused on sweet, but rather the pumpkin spice flavor. It was very rich and nicely spiced, with a hint of sweetness and a lot of pumpkin. The pumpkin seeds on the shells also gave it a nice crunch to contrast the soft and delicate cookie and the very moist filling.
