ImageEach day just got hotter and hotter but I had to leave Victoria soon and I was not about to do so without having tried the most popular fish and chips in the city from the establishment of Red Fish Blue Fish, housed in a cute little shack on the edge of the water. I waited for around an hour on a sunny Saturday but my hard work paid off – the food was fabulous!

I started with Cod Fish + Chips. The batter on the cod was thick, crunchy, not too greasy, and had just wonderful flavours and texture. The fish was flaky and moist. The chips were fresh but the fish was fresher. The tartar sauce was nice and tangy, and the coleslaw was crunchy and by no means overdressed. Image

The Tomato Basil Chilli Cod Tacone was a daily special. The seasoned cod was grilled to perfection with the fish still flaky and moist but also very flavourful. I loved the coleslaw with the fish and the soft taco shell. The lime pickle aioli added another layer of flavour, making it tangy and fit for summer.

ImageThe Seafood Poutine, with shrimp, fish, and tuna belly bacon bits in a light, creamy miso-clam gravy, garnished with green onions and crispy shallots. It was quite salty but the texture was great and it was decently rich.

It is no wonder that there is always a long line down the dock outside Red Fish Blue Fish. They honestly need to speed up their ordering and cooking process as the line is just ridiculous. Very inefficient, if you ask me. The food, at reasonable prices, though, is just fantastic!

Honestly Huge – Honest Tom’s Taco Shop

ImageThinking I should try Honest Tom’s Taco Shop now that I have been to Tampopo since they are beside each other, I went the next day for one of their famous burritos.Image

The Steak and Yucca Burrito was incredibly satisfying. At $8 plus tax, it was huge and included not only the regular rice, beans, salsa, lettuce, sour cream, and cheese, but also creamy avocado. It really provides a smooth texture for the filling, binding everything together. The steak cubes were a little tough and the yucca cubes a little bland so next time, I would probably get chicken or sweet potato instead. Still, the quality was great and it was incredibly filling as well.

A New Twist on Quesadillas – Philladilla

ImagePhilladilla is a new food cart that frequents 33rd and Arch, otherwise known as part of the Food Truck Mecca down at Drexel. To some, a Mexican-based food cart is one too many but this one adds the cute, fresh factor… oh, and the creativity.

The Roast Pork Taco, which I got one for $3, was quite tasty. I loved the Asian slaw on top but the taco could have used more flavour, which would go well with the tender pork. The cilantro pesto was a nice twist and a very refreshing one at that.Image

The Philly Cheesesteak Quesadilla may not seem to be worth the $6 at first. To be honest, it was small and probably will not fill you up as nicely as $6 spent on another food truck. However, I liked the flavour of the tender steak with sweet onions, and American cheese. They went so well with the flour tortilla and for some reason, was a little nostalgic for me. I also loved the sweet, homemade ketchup that came with it. Overall, the menu can be limited but Philladilla is worth a try!

Crabs and Pointy Veggies – The Sunflower Truck Stop

ImageNow that the weather is getting so much better, The Porch at 30th Street Station is a great way to try some of the food trucks that do not usually come by University City. On this particular occasion, I went to The Sunflower Truck Stop.

It was still Grilled Cheese Month so I went with the Crab & Artichoke Dip Grilled Cheese, which was a little pricey at $8 but still delicious. The multigrain bread was toasted until just crispy on the outside and still a little chewy on the inside. The crab and artichoke dip inside was salty, creamy, and just delicious. The spinach did not add much in terms of flavour or texture but everything was just gooey and yummy when it all melted together with gouda and cheddar. The homemade tortilla chips were too salty but had a great texture.

ImageA day of competition in center city entails getting something quick yet unavailable in University City. With so many more specials than McDonald’s, Burger King was, I decided, the place to go. Image

The Sausage Burrito, at only $1, was certainly decent. The sausage was seasoned nicely and adequately juicy. I liked the onions and peppers with the melted American cheese. The tortilla was holding everything together, toasty warm.Image

The Bacon Gouda Muffin was their new, limited-time breakfast offering. On a toasted English muffin were strips of crispy bacon, a slice of gouda cheese, folded eggs, and a herb spread. The taste was quite light from the cheese but there was a nice garlic and herb undertone to the spread that made it different from your regular breakfast sandwich.Image

The French Toast Sticks, served with syrup, was a little too chewy. The outside was not exactly crispy and it was hard to bite and very greasy. Image

For lunch, the new Chipotle Chicken Wrap, which I got with grilled chicken, had a nice chipotle mayo that had some kick. The chicken was dry and tough, though. The lettuce, tomato, and pepper jack cheese did not add much in way of flavour. What I did like was the crispy bacon with the caramelized onions. The onions could be cooked a bit more, though, but it was still nice.Image

The Loaded Tater Tots were disappointing. There were barely any bacon bits and I could not taste any onions. It was just mushy potato with a semi-crispy fried exterior. These were certainly not satisfying. Image

The Veggie Burger, on the other hand, was great. I loved the veggie patty with the usual lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. What I really liked was the ratio of the ketchup to the mayonnaise that reminded me of sandwiches I used to eat when I was little. I finally found that flavour combination!Image

Finally, the Peach Iced Tea was rather refreshing. It had strong tea and peach flavours but I found this to be a bit pricey at around $2 for a small.Image

Burger King’s menu is now so much more interesting than McDonald’s. It’s a shame they do not have one on campus. I am now curious as to what flavours they will have over the summer.

ImageOn a drizzling, dreary day, I love it when I can just sit back, relax, and spend an hour or so in a small, independent café. I am not a big drinker of coffee but I do love to try various sandwiches and treats, and bringing some back for dinner, of course. That’s how I ended up at Green Line Cafe.Image

The Cucumber Cake Cupcake with Vegan Lime Cream Cheese Frosting was actually quite bad, especially for $2.50. The cake had plenty of grated cucumber but the cake was dense and hard, sticking to the cup. It had air bubbles and was not moist and soft at all. The flavour was at least light. I did like the vegan frosting, despite the lack of lime flavours. It was sweet and slightly dense.Image

The Spicy Meatloaf Sandwich was the special of the month and an absolute delight. It had a great meatloaf with Korean BBQ sauce and Asian slaw served on ciabatta. It had a lovely spicy kick to it, marrying with the juicy meatloaf nicely. The Asian slaw was crunchy, slightly too greasy, but with a nice sweet undertone. The ciabatta was nice once toasted. It was a great fusion sandwich.Image

The Sweet Potato Burrito was just okay. I did like the cubed sweet potato rather than mashed. It did not have extra sugar so it had the natural sweet potato flavours. There was plenty of brown rice and black bean and corn salsa but not enough flavours in every bite of the burrito. I could not really taste the chipotle vegan aioli so that’s probably why it was lacking in flavours. I do like the added spinach, though.Image

Service was great and just a heads up that this is a cash-only café. The atmosphere is just so relaxing and quaint – a neighbourhood gem!

Double Deluxe – McDonald’s

ImageI made it in the morning just in time for breakfast. Thus, I got to see the boards being changed by using a handle to rotate the boards, which was pretty cool.Image

The new Steak & Egg Burrito was decent but not that great. It was quite skinny and the steak was a little tough and dry. The cheese and eggs were okay but I would prefer the flavours of the traditional sausage burrito which has more flavour. I did like the salsa inside though.Image

The Sausage, Egg & Cheese McGriddles had a nice blend of sweet from the syrup in the griddle cakes and savoury from the seasoning in the sausage patty and the melted cheese slice. The folded eggs were fluffy and this is one of the better breakfast options in my opinion. Image

The Angus Deluxe Snack Wrap was quite good, with a nice strip of beef patty amongst onions, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, and pickles. It was simple yet not lacking ingredients. The tortilla mostly kept it together but you have to be careful so as to not get it everywhere.Image

The Daily Double was not double the taste. The thin beef patties were dry and the bun was not that great either. The lettuce and tomatoes were both there but with the ketchup was just so ordinary.Image

The McFlurry with Reese’s is no longer available so I am glad I had it when I did. It was great as I love Reese’s peanut butter cups. Chocolate, peanut butter, and vanilla soft serve – what is not to love?13-03-17 - McFlurry with Reese's - McDonald's

Honestly, I’m running out of choices at McDonald’s. Let’s just hope they will offer new options soon. I am still waiting for the egg white breakfast sandwiches!

Melt that Ranch – Taco Bell

ImageI was really hungry after a day at a show and decided on something fast and cheesy. However, they did not offer the loaded grillers at the Taco Bell on campus, which is a total shame.

The Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos was decent. I could not taste too much of the cool ranch flavour as it was not that heavily seasoned. The taco shell was crispy and the ground beef, lettuce, and cheese was all decent for fast food.Image

The Meximelt was more like a beef burrito but skinnier and full of cheesy goodness. It was nice with the pico de gallo to add a tangy freshness to the burrito.

ImageFinally, the Caramel Apple Empanada was great. Crispy on the outside, the pastry was really sweet from the caramel but not overwhelming because of the acidity of the apples. The filling was piping hot and so good!Image

ImageWith a bunch of coupons in my possession, St. Patrick’s Day promotions, and featured steak menu items, I basically had a day of just Dunkin’ Donuts food. Well, it was nice to share sweets with a friend, but still, the sandwiches were filling. However, I love breakfast all day long so it was no problem. Image

The Irish Creme Iced Coffee, which I had with some skim milk, was creamy and sweet. I loved the traditional Irish creme flavour that was quite prominent, especially near the bottom of the cup. Image

The Irish Creme Donut was filled with a flavoured cream that was just as sweet and just as good. It looked very plain and unappetizing though so I think a warmer brown or a different colour altogether would have been nice. Image

The Angus Steak & Egg Breakfast Sandwich that I got on a plain bagel – just like their advertisements – was just okay. The bagel was nicely toasted and I liked the simple cheese and freshly fried egg. However, the steak was a little dry. Image

The Angus Steak & Egg Wake-up Wrap was the same, with a good toasty tortilla, gooey melted  cheese, half an egg patty, and dry steak. I really wanted some juicy meat so this was disappointing. 

The Big n’ Toasted was pretty good. The toast was nicely browned and thick enough. I liked the egg and cheese combination with the bacon. The bacon could have been a little crispier, I thought, and it was not as big as I had expected it to be, especially since the bread got moist again after being in the bag. Image

The Hash Browns were actually not bad, just too greasy. They were just the right size and crispy on the outside while the inside was mushy. It had decent seasoning, too. Image

The Lucky Mint Donut was certainly prettier than the Irish Creme one despite having the same, delicious filling. It was green and thus perfect for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.Image

The Cinnamon Cake Donut was a little dry and a little bland on the inside. However, I did like the sweet cinnamon sugar, though it was messy to eat. 

The Apple Cheese Danish was nice and flaky, with some chew and density to the pastry. I liked the apple filling but could have used more sweet cream cheese inside to amp up the sweetness of the glaze and icing drizzle a bit.Image

The Triple Chocolate Chunk Cookie was not that good. I prefer an ooey, gooey, and very soft cookie but this was only slightly soft and moist in the center. The edges were a little crunchy hard for me although the different kinds of chocolate was nice. Image

ImageThe Chocolate Chip Muffin had a lot of chocolate chips inside but the batter was a little dry, especially on the edge. I did like the sugar topping on top though to give it more sweetness.Image

The Corn Muffin was like a cornbread and moist and crumbly at the same time. It was not overly sweet but you can definitely get that corn aroma coming through.

Finally, the Caramel Latte Lite had a faint but nice caramel flavour. It was a decent latte that I probably would not have gotten had it been for the coupon. I just do not think their espresso is as good as those at other places.Image

There are so many more options to choose from at the store in 30th Street Station. The one on campus is just a little limited. Both seem rather clean and accommodating though. So many coupons that it was all for great value.

Mexican, French, What Have You – Street Food Philly

ImageSince they sold out of both of these by the time I went on Monday, I was not able to try them. So, I asked them to save me an order of each through Twitter and they were very happy to oblige. Image

The BBQ Roast Pork Burrito was huge and very flavorful. The chipotle BBQ flavor was definitely present in the roast pork, which was just a tad tough and dry. The white beans were great, as were the crunchy cabbage and cheddar cheese. However, there was a bit too much white rice for my liking, especially since it clumped up a little and some bites were a bit bland. Image

The Coq Au Vin, besides being a tad too greasy, was delicious. The chicken was very juicy and the portion was decent enough for $10. I was not crazy about the sliced crispy potatoes, but they were good and those who love potatoes would probably like it. I loved the pearl onions (so good!), mushrooms, carrots, and celery in the stew. The flavour was a full, rich one, and thus very good.
